Definition of semiconductor
Semiconductor refers to the material with conductivity between conductor and insulator at room temperature. Semiconductors are widely used in consumer electronics, communication systems, medical instruments and other fields. For example, diodes are devices made of semiconductors. No matter from the perspective of science and technology or economic development, the importance of semiconductor is very huge. Most of today's electronic products, such as computers, mobile phones or digital recorders, have a very close relationship between the core units and semiconductors. Common semiconductor materials include silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, etc., and silicon is one of the most influential semiconductor materials in commercial applications.
There are many forms of matter, such as solid, liquid, gas, plasma and so on. We usually call the materials with poor conductivity, such as coal, artificial crystal, amber, ceramics and so on, as insulators.
